By the time the student has reached the 4th lesson, they are almost always ready to use TypeAbility independently. In 1999, David Pinto developed a program that made recording music with a computer accessible to blind people. He started teaching it to young blind music prodigies. Although only a handful of keyboard shortcuts were necessary to run the program, the children constantly hit the wrong keys because they didn't know how to type. Because of this, it required one teacher for every student to ensure they didn't get in trouble using the computer. So David decided to make a learn-to-type program that would teach blind students how to type so that they could use the computer to record their music. This was the origin of TypeAbility! Teachers of the visually impaired were exposed to the program and suggested releasing it to the public.
